Penrose Hotel or Pentillie Castle?

The Pentillie team are delighted to confirm, that yes, Pentillie Castle did feature as the stunning Penrose Hotel in Sky 1’s new drama series ‘Delicious’, starring Dawn French, Emilia Fox and Iain Glen.

Many of Pentillie’s previous guests will recognise the lawns and terraces, as well as one or two bedrooms. However, perhaps the most compelling images from the new series are the aerial shots of the Penrose Hotel set above the River Tamar in Cornwall. As the Sunday Times says, “Delicious shows a different side to the county [Cornwall], in which the sea is not spotted once. The opening shot, as Glen effects introductions in a voiceover, is a drone’s-eye view of rolling hills, through which the Tamar cuts a meandering path under train viaducts on its stately way to Plymouth Sound.”

Delicious’s production team took full advantage of the terraced gardens, woodland valleys and river frontage at Pentillie Castle, and have used every nook and cranny through which to develop the storyline. Not only have they kept away from the Cornish seascape, but the production is filmed almost entirely in South East Cornwall – bringing attention to the wonderful Tamar Valley and village of Calstock.

If you want to find out more about this glorious corner of Cornwall, not only can you stay at the Penrose Hotel, but you can also explore many of the locations in and around the Tamar Valley – one of our favourite ways to do this is by train – the Tamar Valley Line, or by canoe with the team from Canoe Tamar.

Why not join Delicious’ home economist, Lisa Heathcote, on Saturday 14th January for a dinner and talk. Not only will she share some insights about working behind the cameras on both Delicious and Dowtown Abbey, but she will be advising on the menu for the evening with Pentillie’s chef Casey to re-create some of the dishes seen in the series. £32.50pp dinner only. B&B also available.

A great way to explore the Tamar Valley is by taking the Tamar Valley train line from Plymouth to Gunnislake. The line stops in the riverside village of Calstock  – another of the Delicious locations.

Visit Calstock’s Facebook page for some insight into village life in the Tamar Valley.
