Land Rover Defender Day 2018 – our best yet!

After what has felt like an eternity of miserable weather, the sun gods came out to play on Sunday and blessed us with glorious sunshine on the warmest day of the year so far as we welcomed over 1,200 Land Rover Defender and 4×4 enthusiasts as well as many couples and families looking for a fantastic day out. We think that’s exactly what we gave you. The event had such a great vibe and everywhere we looked people were beaming from ear to ear – what a happy lot you are!

Around the Castle there were a variety of motor and country related trade stands, one of our favourites had to be the Toylander stand, letting the children have rides around the front of the Castle – wow those children drove better than some of the adults around the off-road course!

Thank you to Roger Young Land Rover for their display of cars and for bringing Land Rover Experience to the event – it was a fantastic opportunity to see the new Velar in action off-road!

Plenty to see at Defender Day 2018 Never run out of things to say about Defenders Your place or mine - Defenders with homes on their backs Big Defender, Little Defender... Dogs were very welcome too Great coffee & food stalls at Defender Day 2018

The 6 kilometre 4×4 off-road course was received extremely well and the new ‘sleeper challenge’ was deemed to be an excellent new addition – the comments heard by the marshals while somewhat ‘blue’ were very positive. We had best get our thinking caps on as to what we are going to challenge you and your vehicles to do next year!

Splash as another Defender enters the river route! The Sleeper challenge was certainly not for sleepers - it was tough going! Another Defender makes its way through the river run

There were delicious smells bursting out of the food court from Crispy Hog, World Pizza, Helluva pasty, Cornish Venison, Pentillie Chilli, and Dave’s Salsa, with Harding & Scoots and The Off Road Cafe  serving excellent coffee, and delicious crepes from Coastal Crepes. Our Skinner’s sponsored bar was, as always, a hit.

Reducing waste at our outdoor events, particularly single use plastic, and recycling has been weighing heavily on everyone’s minds this year – probably more so since David Attenborough drew our attention to the huge damage plastic waste is having on our oceans, and thus on all of our health and wellbeing. This year we took steps to reduce waste by investing in eco cups from Branded Cups, and operated a deposit scheme whereby the cups were charged at £1 for your first drink, and you had the choice to either take the collectable cup home or return it to the bar for your £1 back. With this major change, as well as not selling plastic water bottles but having free water on tap, and many of our food stands using recyclable food packing we managed to reduce our waste by at least two thirds. Normally we can fill up to 3 wheelie bins at an event, this time we didn’t even fill one! We are incredibly proud of our efforts and are very conscious that we have set the standard for all of our future events. Thank you to all of you for supporting us to reduce waste.

Eco-cups made by Branded Cups helped to reduce waste Eco-cups with the Pentillie logo on them were quite a collectors item! Eco-cups by Branded Cups meant you could enjoy a drop almost guilt-free (provided you weren't driving!) We can normally fill nearly 3 wheelie bins, but this was all the rubbish generated by 1,200 people at Defender Day - not even one wheelie bin!

Landulph Under Fives pre-school provided some fabulous entertainment for the kids, with a bouncy castle, rodeo ram, face painting, glitter tattoos, arts and crafts and a sweetie stall – all money raised went to the pre-school. Veronica Lamond brought her beautifully illustrated Landy books series for the younger Landy fans to take home with them. Older kids and adults were entertained by a segway course, air rifle shooting, laser clay shooting and archery.  The gardens had also finally come into bloom which, along with new play installations from Terra Timber UK made for a more interesting walk through the gardens.

Cornwall Segways go off-road at Defender Day Laser clay shooting proved popular at Defender Day The walk through the gardens was beautiful with all the Sping blooms Visitors could try their aim with The Gun Room Something for everyone including the Rodeo Ram and Bouncy Castle Lonewolf Archery provided excellent tuition for all

For those that wanted a chauffeur driven experience on the 4×4 course Cornwall and Devon Land Rover club were offering rides for £5 per person of which the proceeds were split 50/50 between them and our event charity Mission Motorsport.  The total raised for the charities from your generous donations at the activities, and on the chauffeur-driven 4×4 course totalled £411.46!

Thank you to Bearmach for sponsoring the people’s choice Best in Show award – the two prizes were awarded to Chris Rout and the Police!

Also a big thank you to Launceston First Aid who were on hand in case of any emergencies – luckily there were none, phew!

We hope you agree with all the team here at Pentillie Castle, that 2018 was our best Defender Day to date. The whole event went smoothly and the feedback from those who came has been an absolute pleasure to read. So much so, that we have decided that we WON’T be changing the name of the event. We all have so much love and appreciation for the Land Rover Defender and that is what the main focus of the day has always been about and should remain. Of course other 4×4 drivers will always be welcome to come and enjoy the day and take full advantage of our off-road course.
