Eating cake raises £1782.17 for the Mustard Tree!

On a very bright and sunny morning of Friday 5th October, Pentillie hosted a Coffee Morning in aid of the Mustard Tree Cancer Support Unit at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. We opened the doors just before 9am to find people already parking cars and eagerly making their way to the front door, and that pattern continued for much of the morning!

Inside the Castle, guests were greeted by an incredible array of indulgent cakes, and were told to help themselves and hot drinks in return for a monetary donation. Thankfully the sun was shining, meaning guests could head outside enjoy sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the river Tamar whilst catching up with friends!

We also held a raffle and with fantastic prizes kindly donated were donated by local people and businesses including a consultancy from Harmony Interiors, Aveda gift set, a Wilf’s Wheels fire pit, a Pilates one to one session, cushions, fizz and home-made jams and many more!

The Pentillie staff generously volunteered their time to come in and work for free to set up the event, meet and greet guests, serve hot drinks, host the raffle and to tackle the clean up operation! Many of the team also made at least one delicious cake – some used Pentillie grown ingredients from the kitchen garden, whilst one staff member made a fabulous mustard tree stencil to use when icing the top of their cake and another set their alarm for 5.30am to prove and bake their 2 batches of delicious cinnamon rolls and rosewater pink fingers – who knew we had so many talented bakers amongst us!

The Mustard Tree holds a special place in many of our hearts here at Pentillie and our very own Sarah Coryton volunteers as a physical therapist every Wednesday so gets to see first-hand the incredible work they do and the difference they make to people’s lives. That was also apparent by the huge amount of people who walked through the doors of Pentillie to support such a wonderful event and we are delighted to say a staggering £1782.17 was raised on the day! We are completely overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness and generosity and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts we felt so incredibly proud to be able to hand a bulging envelope straight to The Mustard Tree!

About the Mustard tree

The Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre has been created to support people with cancer, their carers and family. The Centre is available to anyone affected by cancer at any stage of the illness and offers a wide range of services within a comfortable environment where you can share your concerns, ask questions and receive support. The Centre is also available to relatives and carers and they will be able to also gain support and ask any questions they may have about their loved ones condition/treatment as well as any concerns they may have about themselves (eg emotional or psychological).

The Centre has a welcoming atmosphere with a comfortable area for you to sit and reflect or speak to someone about any concerns you have. We are also able to offer information about your illness, details of the support that is available to you and your family and offer you the opportunity to talk to someone about how you feel. For more information on these, please see our Support Services section.

The Centre is also available at the Outreach Clinics (Triangle Centres) at Kingsbridge, Liskeard and Tavistock one day a week. This is to be able to provide support to patients closer to their homes. For more information about the Triangle Centres, please see our Triangle Outreach Centres section.
