PenGrillie BBQ Festival 2017

Delicious food, live music and a smoking hot competition…

On Sunday 6th August 2017, we hosted our second PenGrillie BBQ Festival and what a blazing success! There was food galore, awesome smells from over 30 barbecues smoking away and foot stomping music from local band Black Friday.

Some of the South West’s best Street Food Outlets were on hand to feed the many, with asado meats from Sizzle Grills, seafood favorites from Thyme and Tide, wood fired pizzas from Kernowforno and vegetarian delights from Feniton Foods. Not to mention venison burgers from Good Game, tasty nachos from Dave’s Salsa and BBQ picks from Brown and Bean.

A selection of local BBQ related businesses exhibited their goods, ranging from River Amble Creamery with their mouth watering Cornish Jack cheese, to Quiet Waters Farm with their famous rubs and sauces, and the Cornish BBQ Hut Company, who brought one of their amazing huts. There were many more stands including; Tamar Grow Local, Smokin’ Smithy, Trevethan Gin, 165 Port SquadronCornish Apple Brandy, Eat the Smoke and the Cornish Food Box Company.

Once again our sponsored Skinners bar seemed a popular place to be, with the locals and enthusiasts sizzling around to grab their pint of Cornwall’s finest. The addition of our Gin and Fizz Bar, Harding & Scoots fine coffee and Clio’s Van du Vin, also went down blazingly.

Twelve teams took to their ‘pits’ to battle it out to win the coveted title of the PenGrillie ‘Grand Champion’.  The BBQ competition consisted of four classes; Poultry, Seafood, Ribs and ‘The Ultimate Chilli’, which was judged by a ‘People’s Choice’ vote. Teams cooked up a real treat for our judging panels and created an incredible atmosphere on the Castle’s Old Tennis Lawn. Not to forget, the wonderful compering from Country Wood Smoke star and UK BBQ Mag editor, Marcus Bawdon.

This years introduction of the ‘People’s Choice’ vote went down a treat and the competition got really hot. In aid of Children’s Hospice South West, visitors raced to buy one of the 100 spoons on sale which gave them the privilege of tasting each of the twelve teams chilli’s and voting for their favourite. Alongside the outdoor activities, which included Archery and Air Rifle Shooting, and the CHSW stand, PenGrillie managed to raise a ‘grilliant’ £663.60 for this very worthwhile charity supporting children and their families through their short but precious lives.

The scrumptious turn ins provided a flaming challenge for our judging panels, who chose the winners of our 2017 PenGrillie awards….

We can’t forget our fabulous judges: Ian Mckend, Andy Williams, Jackie Weight and Karen Lucas Penhall. Plus our guest judges John Gower, Marcus Bawdon, Josh Clifton, John Hall and our very own High Sheriff of Cornwall, Sarah Coryton.

To add to the fun, professional smoking and grilling demonstrations took place throughout the day, which varied from ‘Moroccan Lamb’ with BBQ Queen, Jackie Weight, ‘Grillin’ the Season’ from chef Dan Cox, ‘Brisket’ from Inkie’s Smokehouse Karen Lucas Penhall, and ‘Mocha Steaks’ with Marcus Bawdon.

Visitors got to test their chilli-eating mettle, by taking part in the Chilli Wing Eating Competition, which was kindly sponsored by Inkie’s Smokehouse BBQ. Twenty brave competitors raced to eat 10 super spiced wings the quickest. Well done all of the competitors and especially to the winner, Jody Blackman, who won a lunch for 2 at Inkie’s – enjoy!

Landulph Under 5’s Pre-School hosted our children’s entertainment area, providing a variety of fun activites for the young smokers. The popular Kids Corner featured BBQ themed crafts, a bouncy castle, face painting, giant outdoor games, glitter tattoos, a Lego table and even a children’s BBQ s’mores demonstration. The Pre-School raised an amazing £800, thank you all!

There is no denying that we were totally overwhelmed at how many people wanted to come and experience our BBQ Festival. With 250 advance ticket sales we thought we may quadruple that, but never in our wildest dreams did we expect in excess of 10 times that amount! Thank you very much for the amazing support. To all those who have given feedback, we feel that with a few tweaks which are easily remedied we will make next years event bigger and better than ever….so you had best get the 15th July in your diaries for PenGrillie 2018!
