We met… Through a mutual friend whilst Matthew was at University in Southampton, and Hannah was visiting.
First impressions of your husband…We were at an Italian restaurant and rather than sitting at the seat that had been saved for him, he plonked himself next to me! But I didn’t complain too much.
His first impressions of you… I had been told by my friend that they had a friend (Hannah) who was perfect for me, so obviously I then spent a year avoiding the dreaded “set up”. On finally meeting Hannah I quickly realised what they meant and we haven’t looked back since.
What was your proposal? We had just purchased our first home, and the night before we moved in Matthew had got there and filled the dining room with candles, the woodburner was on and he got down on one knee!
What were your wedding theme/ colours? We chose an English country garden/woodland theme, with lots of foliage and pale pink and pale blue as our chosen colours.
What flowers did you choose? We wanted lots of foliage, and since it was summer we went for pale pink and pale blue flowers. Amanda did a wonderful job of decorating the Lytch gate and porch at the church with floral arches, with another arch at the alter – it smelt amazing. We then had moss table runners with trees and hanging candles, with pink and blue flowers in little vases on the tables. It looked fantastic.
How did you choose your bridesmaids/ best man and ushers? The best man was Matthew’s younger brother, Cameron….who had a lot of ammunition to write a great speech! The ushers were Matt C, Matthew’s brother-in-law and Matt H, a good friend of many years from Matthew’s days at the athletic club in Southampton. The bridesmaids were Lucy, Hannah’s sister, Aimee, Matthew’s sister, and Katie, one of Hannah’s best friends. They all did a wonderful job and looked fantastic, and we can’t thank them enough.
We chose our venue because… Since we are both originally from different parts of the country, we didn’t really have any ties to any particular area. We both love Cornwall, and decided it would be somewhere that we’d like our guests to come to for a fun filled weekend. We originally visited Cornwall to visit another wedding venue…but we made our decision to choose Pentillie as soon as we came down the drive for the first time. When we got through the door and met the team, it only made us love it more.
I chose my dress because…. It was the first dress I tried on, and I knew straight away it was ‘the one’. I didn’t want a lot of bling, and love the idea of lace. It really was my dream dress.
What food did you choose for your Wedding Breakfast? Casey at Pentillie helped us a lot choosing our food! We had lovely big wooden boards of antipasti, cheese, artichokes and bread for our starters, which was lovely and social with all of the guests sharing. For our main meal we had slow roasted pork belly, butterbean mash infused with rosemary, seasonal green vegetables and fennel jus, with sharing bowls of parmentier potatoes. The pork had been cooking for days and it was so delicious. For desert we had not so messy Pentillie Mess – lovely fruit from the estate, and not quite as rich or heavy as a full eton mess. A perfect summer desert!
What food did you choose for your Evening Buffet? As we wanted to maximise the wonderful surroundings of the drinks reception, we had quite a late wedding breakfast. Therefore in the evening we had bacon sandwiches, with the bacon provided by one of our good friends (and guest at the wedding), Ben Morris. Based in Dartmoor, his company ‘Cured on the Moors’ provided the bacon, and the day before the wedding he was slaving away in the kitchen at Pentillie chopping all of the bacon in preperation!
How did you feel as you walked down the aisle? Remarkably chilled! I felt really relaxed, and just focused on Matthew at the end of the aisle.
What was the most important investment for you? Food, drink, dress, honeymoon? All of it. The food and drink was really important to us, as we do love eating and drinking! The dress is of course important; you only get one white dress, and it absolutely should be perfect.
What was your favourite part of the wedding? I don’t think we can choose. The Church ceremony was very special, and of course a very important part of our day. Reverend Painter was superb, he did such a wonderful ceremony and we will always remember it. The drinks reception was filled with sunshine and fun, with the beautiful views over the River Tamar it has to also be one of our favourite moments. Walking into the beautiful marquee followed by the fantastic speeches and delicious food and drink also has to feature, as does partying the night away!
What was the song for the first dance? We are very ashamed to say it was ‘Little Things’ by One Direction! We aren’t particular fans but we just love this song, and the lyrics seemed to fit. We had a few cheeky dance lessons to try and ease our nerves!
Where did you go on your honeymoon? We had a mini-moon in Cornwall with 5 nights at the Scarlet Hotel (amazing) and then 4 nights at a beach hut on the beach at Gwithian Towans just outside of St Ives, with lots of good food, drink and surfing. We plan to have our main honeymoon in November with a week in South Africa (including time on safari) and a week in Mauritius.
What is your top tip for other brides or grooms? Be organised, prior planning makes the day and means it is much less stressful. Make sure you write down everything that you want at your wedding, and tick it off as you go. Be prepared for things not going according to plan, and always have a ‘plan B’! Finally, make it your own, its your day and should be a reflection of all the things you love.
