All hands on deck as we prepare to open the gardens & Castle this spring & summer

Renovations underway inside and outside Pentillie Castle.

Hang in there, spring is near

With the days getting longer and the first signs of spring fully emerging, the Pentillie team has been hard at work behind the scenes to make sure everything is looking its best for the seasons ahead. From renovating the attic bathroom to re-tiling and deep-cleaning the pool; no corner of the estate has been left untouched!

Our gardening team and the wonderful garden volunteers have spent the last few months carefully shaping the estate's grounds, so they'll be bursting with life just in time for our first charity Garden Open Day on Sunday 23rd March, 11am until 5pm for Children's Hospice South West.

Meanwhile, our housekeeping and front-of-house teams have been polishing floors, touching up the paintwork, and freshening up the castle to make sure every room is as welcoming as ever for our upcoming Wedding Show, Afternoon Teas, and spring stays.

We can't wait to welcome you!

Tree planting on the Pentillie estate.

Royal plantings

Back in 2020 you may remember us talking about an exciting collaboration between head gardeners of Cornwall and the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh, leading to our balmy (usually) county being chosen as an ecologically useful spot to nurture some incredibly rare and endangered species of conifer. As part of the scheme, and to ensure the geographical spread of the genetics of these rare plants, the RBGE allocated different conifers to a number of gardens throughout Cornwall, as climate change threatens their natural habitats.

This was repeated in 2024 and we have been allocated 3 x Abies alba, 20 x Picea breweriana, 20 x Podocarpus salignus. These trees are currently braving the storms in the unheated greenhouse (the sweet peas are going for it in the warm one!), ready for some hardening off before planting out into the woodland gardens in the next few weeks.

Next up in our (re-)introduction: Ted & Sarah

If you have visited Pentillie, it's highly likely you have met Ted and Sarah. In the late 70's, Ted was running a helicopter company in Scotland when his cousin, Jeffery Coryton, invited him to learn the ropes of the estate with a view to him inheriting Pentillie. With no farming experience, Ted embraced the challenge, and moved to Cornwall with wife Sarah, and their young children.

Jeffery unexpectedly passed away in 1980, leaving Pentillie to his widow Kit who became life-tenant of the estate. Despite living and working on one of the estate farms, Ted and Kit did not see eye-to-eye, making it 27 years before Ted and his family returned to the Castle. Their three children, Sammie, Oliver and Roonie had never been down the driveway of Pentillie until 2007!
