Dated: Friday 31st January 2025
Though the days of bright blue skies & calm weather have been rare so far, when they do appear, it’s enough to make us bounce up & down with spring joy!
Explore volunteer opportunities in the Pentillie Gardens!
In 2024, we welcomed a wonderful team of volunteers, who’ve been joining us in the gardens once a month, and more recently, every fortnight. Since May, their passion and dedication have helped us tackle a variety of satisfying tasks in the gardens, including harvesting apples for a bountiful batch of apple juice, introducing new planting schemes along the Wisteria Walk, and revitalising the herbaceous borders with weeding, mulching, and replanting.
Looking ahead, we will see the team take on our winter pruning scheme, including work on the apple orchards, wisteria, roses, and, not least, the 76 trees along Lime Avenue. Why not come and see the progress for yourself at one of our Garden Open Days. While the volunteer group is currently full, you're more than welcome to join our waiting list!
Alternatively, become a Friend of Pentillie and enjoy exclusive access to our woodland gardens on select dates each month, and watch as our gardens transform through the seasons. You'll also receive discounts on events and access to the swimming pool once the weather warms up!

Explore the Estate at our Garden Open Days
This year, our Garden Open Days will be in aid of three really extraordinary charities!
Sunday 23rd March: Children's Hospice South West - needs little introduction, but this fabulous and generous charity provides hospice care for youngsters with life-limiting conditions, as well as crucial support for their families.
Sunday 13th April: Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution - less well known, but a no less important charity. RABI offers financial and mental health support to farming families in need across the UK.
Sunday 18th May: Saltash Community Kitchen - a local charity that provides a space for community enterprises and interactions, focused on diverting food waste to the tummies of those who need it most.
A variety of cakes, tray bakes, and scones, as well as cafetiere Owen’s Coffee and a variety of teas, will be available to purchase from the Dining Room for you to enjoy in the Castle, or on the terraces.

It’s not just the gardens that are getting a makeover…
As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the estate, the team is hard at work on a variety of exciting projects!
Inside the Castle, we’re about to begin the much-anticipated renovation of the attic bathroom, which will feature a basin you can actually use without getting your feet wet, and a larger, more luxurious shower. We’ll also be giving the kitchen and hallway floor tiles a thorough polish to restore their natural shine, while the walls receive a fresh coat of paint for a bright new look.
Outdoors, the terrace and surrounding patios are getting a power wash to ensure the stonework is pristine and ready for those summer barbecues!
And most exciting of all, we’ve completely emptied the swimming pool to carry out essential re-tiling and a deep clean. Soon, it will be sparkling once again, ready for use when the weather warms up.
Every corner of Pentillie is being carefully tended to, ensuring it’s in tip top condition to welcome our guests.
The team behind Pentillie
We thought it was high time we (re-)introduced you to the team behind it all, giving you a closer 'behind the scenes' look at Pentillie!
First up is Sammie, the owner, pictured above with her husband Marc and their two wonderful sons, Charlie and Hector, on a wild winter walk across Bodmin Moor last weekend.
Sammie took over as custodian from her father, Ted, in 2017, and has since continued to look after the Castle and surrounding estate. From undertaking refurbishing projects, and developing our sustainability initiatives, to leading and expanding the Pentillie team. Sammie continues to steer the estate forward, with Ted and Sarah remaining an integral part of the team, keeping us all on track!
